Oman Principal Training

Increasing Leadership Capacity of Principals Throughout Oman

Seward Incorporated, as part of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (funded by the U.S. State Department and implemented by Creative Associates, International, Inc.), was subcontracted to design, develop, and conduct Principal Leadership Training for Oman secondary school principals and deputy principals. The purpose is to increase the leadership capacity of principals throughout Oman.

The training is comprised of 26 distinct topics, which in the initial training were presented as three, two-week workshops conducted over five months. A final one-week workshop was designed to engage Oman Ministry of Education leaders in a discussion about providing this training to all secondary school principals in Oman.

Three critical areas of leadership training are addressed: organizational, instructional, and operational. Specific topics are grouped into three broad areas:

  1. Elements of Effective School Leadership
  2. Managing Change in a School
  3. Critical Leadership Tasks of a School Principal

The initial training was taught by teams of trainers with advanced degrees, practical school administration experience, and international experience.

Features of the Training

  • Practical assignments were assigned and completed between workshops
  • Active learning experiences and hands-on tools in the training provided a framework for thinking, discussing, and planning the application of the information
  • Arabic and English versions of all slide presentations and an Arabic translator in the workshops helped ensure complete understanding of all concepts and information
  • Useful web sites, research resources, and printed copies of all presentations and handouts were provided to all participants
