Marshall Islands School Leader Professional Development

Interactive DVD

School leaders in the Marshall Islands use this DVD-based instructional resources kit to improve their ability to plan, lead, and evaluate staff development. This project is part of the Building Teacher Capacity program. The interactive DVD presents videos of best teaching practices and a variety of supporting information on staff development planning, practices, and evaluation. The information is presented via videos, photographs, graphics, text and audio. Tutorial instruction modules present questions and provide specific feedback. For the video segments, users may choose between an English or Marshallese sound track.

Users

The DVD is intended for school leaders in the Marshall Islands with at least three or more years of teaching experience. Their primary language is Marshallese, and their English language proficiency ranges from second grade reading level to fluency. The users are scattered geographically over many small islands of the Pacific. The users have a range of experience with technology. Some have access to the Internet, but others do not.

Features

The DVD has two main sections:

  • Topic Overviews provide information about professional development topics and interactive practice exercises in which the user evaluates a school leader’s actions in a typical scenario. At the end of each exercise, the user receives guided feedback. After the user completes all exercises relating to a topic, a cumulative score is displayed.

  • Demonstration Lessons model effective instructional strategies in six critical content areas at five different grade levels. Teaching strategies are demonstrated in video-clips within the context of six major content areas: Math, Science, Social Studies, Health, Marshallese, and English Language Arts. Each video clip concludes with a question-and-answer session with the featured teacher.
