Use of New Technologies in Teacher In-Service Training

The Royal Thai Government asked the Asian Development Bank to assist with strengthening the government’s capacity to carry out new education reforms. The reforms included teacher in-service training in the use of new educational technologies. A specialist in Information Technology in Education from Seward International assessed the government’s capacity in this area. The report addresses the six specific tasks requested by the government and also proposes an Asian Education Network (AEN). The report envisions that the AEN be piloted in Thailand and ultimately serve the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).

Specifically, the following issues were addressed:

  • ICT inputs to instruction and in-service
  • ICT support through proposed regional centers, with an analysis of needs for ICT regional multimedia education centers and mobile ICT support centers
  • Recommendations for an Asian Education Network for ICT support and training
  • Assessment of the capacity of the Office of National Educational Standards (ONES) to provide feedback to stakeholders
  • Capacity of rural areas to deliver support services to teachers and students, including the use of the Internet and multimedia services
  • Proposed costs and plans for implementation
